Portugal remains in 2020 the third safest country in the world, as well as being ranked the safest country in the European Union
Portugal is the third safest country in the world to live and work according to the Global Peace Index.
Among the various indicators that contribute to the ranking of the "Global Peace Index" we stand out only a few as ; internal and external conflicts, criminaltity, relations with neighboring countries, political stability, access to arms, among others.
The 14th edition of this ranking, which classifies 163 independent states and territories and covers 99.7% of the world population, concludes that “the world level of peace has deteriorated, in a world where conflicts and crises have occurred during in the past decade have started to decline, replaced by a new wave of tension and uncertainty following the pandemic. ”
In the study carried out by the Economist Intelligence Unit, the score for each country is assigned according to internal and external conflicts, security and militarization, measured by 23 indicators. "GPI 2020 concludes that the world has become less secure for the ninth time in the past 12 years, with the average peace level of countries falling by 0.34% last year. Overall, the security climate has improved in 81 countries and worsened in 80, "said the study.
