According to the ranking by the Institute of Economics and Peace, Portugal appears in seventh position as the most peaceful country in the world, with 1,372 points in a ranking in which the lowest score, that is, the best, is led by Iceland with 1,112.

In the index prepared annually by the Institute of Economics and Peace in collaboration with the United Nations, Portugal ranks 114th in the economic impact of violence, the costs representing around 3% of Portuguese GDP.

In the eighteenth edition of the Global Peace Index 2024, Iceland is considered the most peaceful country (a position it has held since 2008), followed by Ireland, Austria, New Zealand, Singapore, Switzerland, Portugal, Denmark, Slovenia and Malaysia, and Yemen is now considered the least peaceful country in the world, followed by Sudan, South Sudan, Afghanistan and Ukraine.

Produced by the international think tank, the Institute for Economics and Peace, the report presents the most comprehensive analysis to date of peace, economic value, trends, and ways to develop peaceful societies, covering 99.7% of the world's population through analysis of 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators. These indicators are grouped into three key domains: Ongoing Conflicts, Safety and Security, and Militarisation.

The Global Peace Index 2024;According to the Institute for Economics and Peace, there are 56 active conflicts around the world, the highest number since the II World War, with more than 90 countries involved in cross-border wars that have already forced 110 million people to leave their homes.

The world has become less peaceful for the 12th time, with peace deteriorating in more than 90 countries. 

On the other hand, 65 countries are more peaceful and there was also a drop in the homicide rate in 112 countries, while the perception of crime improved in 96 countries.
