Portugal best country to travel and work remotely

12 May, 2022 General

Climate, social life, low crime rate and relatively affordable cost of living, in addition to visas for digital nomads are seen as some of the top factors for choosing Portugal.

Portugal leads the ranking of the best countries to travel and work remotely, according to an analysis carried out by momondo.

The search engine's Work While Traveling Index puts Portugal ahead of countries like Spain, Romania, Japan, the Czech Republic or Germany, as more people adopt flexible work environments and combine leisure with remote work.

To create this index, momondo analyzed 111 countries and ranked them based on 22 factors in six categories: travel cost and accessibility; local prices; health and safety; remote working conditions; social life; and climate.

The 10 countries that best combine productive working conditions and opportunities for travel adventures, according to momondo are:

Portugal

Spain

Romania

Mauritius

Japan

Malta

Costa Rica

Panama

Czech Republic

Germany

Portugal ranked as the best country in the world for remote work, with high scores in all categories, including climate, social life, low crime rate and relatively affordable cost of living.

Momondo highlights the fact that Portugal also has a visa for digital nomads, in addition to “many inhabitants having a high level of English, which is a strong point for expatriates”.

Spain came in second, mainly because of the high number of cafés and restaurants per capita, along with fast internet, many co-working spaces and remote visas for freelancers. In addition, it has an exuberant nightlife and is open to the LGBTQ+ community.

Romania ranks third, mainly for attractive prices on long-term rentals and local food.
