How to renew your Portuguese residence card

7 March, 2021 Legislation

After Brexit, all UK citizens who are officially residents in Portugal are asked to exchange their current EU residence documents for new ones that explicitly state that they are under the Withdrawal Agreement.

So what do you need to do, to renew your residence permit (even if already expired) : it´s a very easy process, just follow the steps

     1. You have to register online in the Brexit portal - https://brexit.sef.pt/en/ - (even if you have your residence permit expired).

In this portal, you are able to access your own profile and change/update your personal details. You can also register minors who are your dependants (if they are UK nationals), who are not registered for residence.

     2. At the end of this registration, a Certificate with both a QR code and an authentication code will be issued, enabling you, along with your passport, to prove you are resident in Portugal when travelling (at the border, the Border and Immigration agent (SEF) will ask you for your proof of residence).

    3. When registering at this SEF Portal, please make sure that:

        - You are registering with one email per person;

        - The password contains at least: one uppercase letter; one lowercase letter; special character; and one number.

    4. After the online registration, you will receive an email (probably in April/May) from SEF requesting you to book an appointment at a local town Hall to collect biometric data for the new card. This will take place in selected Town Halls. The list of Town Halls providing this service will be announced soon.

We strongly encourage you to exchange your current EU documents for the new card now.

Please note that your current EU residence document (temporary or permanent) continue to be accepted until the expiration date or until the new biometric card is issued.

SEF launched a dedicated Brexit helpline and email address for questions regarding both residency/regularisation and the exchanging documents process.
