Algarve is located in the southernmost region of Portugal and known for the hot climate, crystal-clear waters and golden sand. Why are the Algarve beaches so special?

This region has a huge variety to offer, from only accessible by boat, to enormous stretches that go on for miles, also you have beaches with lifts from the cliff to the beach. Several small islands to explore and the dramatic rock formations to contemplate.

 

Each beach has its own charms and unique features, so we have prepared a list of several beaches along the coast. that must be visited.

These are the popular and favourite locations from beach lovers from all over the world, thanks to the wide range of activities on offer. 

 

-Praia da Marinha: is situated on the southern coast of Portugal, approximately 6 kilometres from the town of Carvoeiro. It is part of the Lagoa municipality in the Algarve region. Considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe, Praia da Marinha is known for its golden cliffs, crystal-clear waters, and natural rock formations. It offers breathtaking views and is perfect for swimming and snorkelling.

 

- Praia de Benagil : is situated near the village of Benagil and the picturesque village of Praia do Carvoeiro and is approximately 20 kilometres east of the city of Portimão. The highlight of Praia de Benagil is the Benagil Cave, which has gained international recognition for its stunning beauty. This cave is characterised by a large opening at the top, allowing sunlight to filter through and illuminate the interior, creating a mesmerising effect. It is accessible by boat and is often included in boat tours along the coastline. You can take a boat tour to explore the cave, while the beach itself is a picturesque spot with calm waters and fine sand.

 

- Praia da Dona Ana; Located near Lagos, Praia da Dona Ana is a small cove surrounded by colourful cliffs. It has clear waters and is ideal for sunbathing, swimming, and snorkelling. The beach is easily accessible and has several amenities nearby. Praia da Dona Ana is known for its interesting rock formations that rise from the sea. These rugged limestone formations have been shaped by erosion, resulting in arches, pillars, and caves. They provide not only a visually stunning landscape but also offer opportunities for exploration and discovery, including scenic trails and viewpoints that provide panoramic views of the coastline and the Atlantic Ocean.

 

- Praia de Faro: Situated on an island connected to the mainland by a bridge, Praia de Faro, also known as Faro Beach, is situated on a narrow sandbar island known as Ilha de Faro, located south of the city of Faro. The island separates the Ria Formosa lagoon from the Atlantic Ocean and is a popular destination with both locals and tourists. It offers a long sandy beach, shallow waters, and a vibrant atmosphere with bars, restaurants, and shops, and is also a popular spot for water sports enthusiasts.

 

- Praia do Camilo: Another gem near Lagos, Praia do Camilo is a small and secluded beach accessed by a long staircase leading down the cliffs. The beach is nestled between towering cliffs and offers stunning rock formations, clear waters, and caves to explore. To reach the beach, visitors must descend a staircase consisting of over 200 steps. While the descent requires some effort, the reward is a stunning view of the beach and its surroundings. The staircase adds to the sense of adventure and discovery when visiting Praia do Camilo.

 

- Praia de Albandeira; This hidden gem is a tranquil beach surrounded by cliffs and offers a peaceful escape from the crowds. Praia de Albandeira is situated near the village of Porches, approximately 8 kilometres east of the city of Carvoeiro, and is relatively small and less crowded, making it a great choice for relaxation and enjoying the natural beauty of the Algarve. While Praia de Albandeira is more secluded, it does offer some basic facilities such as a small parking area and toilets. However, there are no restaurants or beach bars directly on the beach, so visitors are advised to bring their own snacks and drink.

 

- Praia da Rocha: Located in Portimão, Praia da Rocha is one of the most famous and bustling beaches in the Algarve. It boasts a long stretch of golden sand, lively beach bars, water sports activities, and a vibrant nightlife scene. Praia da Rocha offers a long and wide sandy beach that stretches for approximately 1.5 kilometres. The beach is backed by towering sandstone cliffs, which provide a dramatic backdrop to the expansive shoreline. The sand is golden and soft, perfect for sunbathing and beach activities. The beach is also known as one of the best beaches in the Algarve for families thanks to the wide range of activities on offer.
