Loulé Carnival 2025: A Festive Tradition Returns

20 February, 2025 What's On

Carnival in Portugal is a vibrant and colourful celebration that takes place in the days leading up to Lent, typically in February or March. The exact dates vary each year, depending on the Catholic liturgical calendar.

In the Algarve, Loulé’s historic Carnival will light up the streets once again from March 2nd to 4th, 2025, on Avenida José da Costa Mealha.

As the oldest Carnival in Portugal, it promises a colorful celebration filled with 15 vibrant floats, 600 performers, samba schools, animated groups, giant heads, and political satire.

The theme of this year’s parade reflects current global issues, with topics like the upcoming presidential elections, Donald Trump's anti-immigration stance, António Costa's role in the European Council, and Cristiano Ronaldo’s multi-million dollar contract taking center stage. In addition, several floats will focus on the Algarve’s ongoing drought and the much-anticipated desalination plant.

The parade will run daily from 3 PM to 6 PM, with tickets priced at 2 euros. Proceeds will support social causes and local community groups.

A Rich History & Cultural Celebration

Loulé Carnival has been celebrated since 1906, evolving into one of Portugal's most significant cultural events. The festival features a blend of traditional music, local food, and craftsmanship, culminating in a meticulously decorated parade. Each year, the carnival revolves around a specific theme, with all floats adorned accordingly. The vibrant hand-made paper flowers that decorate the floats represent Loulé’s cultural traditions and the Algarve’s almond blossoms, a beautiful symbol of the region’s landscape.

The Creative Process Behind the Carnival

The elaborate flower decorations are made with the help of schools, institutions, and nursing homes, contributing over a million flowers for the floats. The figures perched atop each float are sculpted from styrofoam, painted, and designed to represent animals, people, or themes tied to the year’s focus.
